Perception of KTM Is Always Wrong

Followings are among many words that come into people’s head about the capital city of Nepal, the Kathmandu City. And we can bet that you can even print these on a public newspaper and have it read to the public. All these misconception about Kathmandu is never the same. A equals our answer.

  • Kathmandu is highly populated.  A: Yes and No. There are many regions in Kathmandu that aren’t heavily populated. It just takes a few miles of your biking away from  the heart to get to the fact. Don’t ban Kathmandu just because you heard from someone that it’s a capital city full of people. No is the answer.
  • Kathmandu is Polluted. This is a very hard fact to prove. At times, when there are strikes, garbage pickup system offered by the Kathmandu Metro doesn’t work as workers could be strike. Like the above answer, Get a few miles away from Kathmandu, you are wrong. Because Kathmandu doesn’t mean Thamel or nearby areas. In fact, Kathmandu is only the name of center of the capital.  Yes, its polluted at times but what are you going to expect when you are visiting a third world country anywhere else on earth ?
  • Drugs – though they are illegal, they are Taboo to Kathmandu City. Backpackers love Thamel and nearby areas because of some of this cause. But you cant’ just blame every single backpackers, can you? Drugs use in Kathmandu can be compared to nothing if you compare it relatively to even DEVELOPED countries like US, UK.
  • Prostitution – Have you found a place on earth that has nothing of this short ? It is very unlikely that tourists come to Kathmandu for this reason nor the Nepalese fall for it. It is illegal and anything that seems to be illegal always finds a place in our society. This one is very hard to prove otherwise. But don’t blame it on Kathmandu, it’s happening all over the world including other parts of Nepal.
  • Oh, I am scared to travel. There is no good hospital in Kathmandu! This is completely ignorant and false. There are public to private hospitals in Kathmandu, Patan and Lalitpur. There are also a few dedicated hospitals and doctors office specifically catered tourists.
  • Kathmandu/Nepal is all Hindu Culture - A : wrong. Nepal is one of the most diverse and beautiful flower garden you can imagine. All religions, culture, and ethnic groups live in a harmony here. If you are a traveler wanting to spend a Sunday, yes there are churches in Kathmandu. Your faith shouldn’t make you stop visiting a country, it certainly won’t for Nepal.
  • Kathmandu has Child Labor – A : It’s not just Kathmandu, all poor nations have this problem. But it’s been tackled and those who abuse the rights of a child are punished by law. There are numerous laws in place. Most garments factories do not use Child, everything you buy from Nepal has no label of Child Labor on it! Child labor is an international issue; even in some developed countries, this problem exists, so if you see one or two incidence in Nepal, don’t blame the entire Nepali society.
  • I was thinking of Planning a Visit to Nepal, but I am scared, they say Kathmandu is Crazy.  - who ever said must have gone crazy for not taking a first nap right after arrival. Arrive here, rest for a night. Since your body clock may not adjust and you see environment that seems totally out of your ordinary fancy living, everything is still a live here. Yes, a few worshiped animals like cows might walk on road, but Kathmandu has less accidents than even the highest capitalized countries in the world. Our answer is Crazy would be in a good way. Those who say Kathmandu is Crazy, they meant to say, it’s so mind blowing, my mind went wild. In five minutes of walk; I can see the entire life; poor, rich, short building, tall building, beggars, cars, what not and everything. Oh yes. A mixture of life is Kathmandu.

Any Misconception of this beautiful city we didn’t mention ? Please share.

Until next time,
