Sherpa Puja Before Mountain Climb
Pujas could be perfomed for various occasions such as for prior to a long journey, during festivals such as Dashain and Tihar, and there is a very sweet Puja done by Sherpas before they climb mountains. Even before putting the first foot on Everest’s Path, Sherpas gather around with their expedition team and perform a Sherpa Puja
Sherpa’s Puja before climbing a mountain is an act of asking GOD for permission, protection and blessings. Mountains of high altitudes have claimed many lives all over the world. It is not because of this fear, but because traditions must be passed on from one generation to the next, Sherpa Puja Goes On.
Puja is also spelled as Pooja for easy pronunciation for those who are not familiar with the word. Sherpa Puja is also a Buddhist blessing ceremony.
Some of these Sherpa Pujas include burning of butter lamps, which are lit as part of the Puja. Depending on the budget, some, go upto buring even 30K lamps before the expedition begins for the Deadly Mount Everest
