Some Tips 2 Travel Safely In Nepal

Although these have been focused for Nepal, they could be useful for any countries.

  • As soon as you land in a foreign country, go to your country’s Embassy or Consulate office there. Many people forget this most important safety item. Register there and get some advice from there. By being registered, you help the Embassy find you or assist you in case of emergency such as getting lost when climbing Everest or simply trekking alone somewhere. Embassy will also inform you about the country’s situation and will also advice you on where you should travel and where not as well as on the things to do and avoid.
  • Unless you are travelling in a developed country, drink boiled water or bottled mineral water. Remember to carry hand wash sanitizers in liquid form or in tissues. Use this to clean and sanitize your hands without using the water.
  • Avoid eating salad, and rare cooked food products. Eat well cooked foods.
  • Most products do not carry ingredients list. If you are allergic to certain food items, be careful on what you are eating.
  • Visit the office of Nepal Tourism Board. Here you can get hold of many useful books, maps and more for free.
  • Do not be a target. Avoid being near demonstrations.
  • The one who is providing you accommodation will also help you about whether you should travel late in the night or return to to the accommodation place before certain hours.
  • Travel light. There is no reason to travel with all your gadgets hanging on your body. Leave all your jewelry at home; they are meant for your parties not for travel.
  • Know about the place before you travel. Travel as if you are a citizen of that country. Love that country. For Nepal, we recommend wearing a Nepali topi for men; it will have profound effect on how people look at you. That simple thing shows you love Nepal and Nepalese. Be friendly with people. Do not assume they do not understand your language hence do not use curse words. Once, while I spotted a tourist in Thamel who called everyone running after him animals. They were trying to sell stuff like Nepali Knives and other products. The tourist had to face with a bunches of angry sellers who felt low with that animal word. He said sorry and they left him alone. If people approach you to sell stuff, just say, no thank you and go about your business or buy it; some of them might be worth it.
  • Travel with minimal cash it your pocket. Use credit or debit cards. All major cards are accepted in major cites in Nepal
  • Use your common sense, to be safe. Make your own list. Here is one more you can add, get all emergency contacts such as hospital phone number, embassy’s phone number, tourist police phone number etc. If you have found anything missing in this list, just comment to this post.

That’s all for today. Have a great day everyone and see you soon in Nepal!
