Donating Money To Nepal ? Take your time!
Step your foot in the capital city of Nepal, you have all kinds of organizations here, social, travel, tourism, business, youth, tribes, you name it! And not to forget the foundations, clubs, boards, they too are included in the word organization which is being discussed in this post.
There are the big international organizations such as WWF, UNICEF and there the little organizations which are created to go on a picnic once in a year! Yet the name of these little ones will touch your heart. Consider this fiction name : Poor Nepal Your Helping Hands Social Organization. Doesn’t that name make you want to reach for your wallet? (sorry, if that name matches with any existing organizations.
)
There could be as many as two thousands located in the Kathmandu capital alone. How many are working and how many are living? Even Nepali Government has no record of them.
And there are those claiming to be social organizations for Nepal yet their office is not in Nepal, but only in virtual land. Many will claim they are working for poverty eradication, for providing heath care to disadvantage childrens, free education for them and so on. There will be photos of innocent Nepali kids on the first page, using them to sell the product (donation) and they will also show you pages of their work portfolio and a link, Please Donate to us!
Some of the Nepali travel companies have gone to such an extreme, they now own websites which appear as websites of social organizations. A technique used to boost the image of the travel company by claiming that it not only offers travel services but also accepts donations for its social organization. The most popular phrase used is, our company also contributes to society!
All are looking out for ways to take advantage of poverty of the country
On the Internet, you can fake. You can claim to be a website of a none profit organization working for Nepal and make profit without doing nothing. In Nepal, there is no Government body that investigates internet frauds
Internet fraudulant in a crime punishable by law. Generally speaking, a government can take action on websites owned by its nationalities if the website does not comply with law. So, Nepal would probably not worry about it if such sites were not hosted in Nepal. Foreign Government will probably not even take any interest simply because it has many other internet fraudulants to take care which are much easier to investigate and have high volume of transactions such as lottery scam
So you donated your money. Do you wonder if it went to a pocket of a rich man or did it really feed to hungry kids?
Nepal needs another organization that looks after other organizations!
So what can you do as a user when there is no control?
- Learn about the website. Look for its office address located in Nepal. Send them email, ask questions. Before you donate your money
- Donate to Unicef or Save the children or other bigger organizations who work closely with other smaller organizations located in Nepal. They distribute their donation to other social organizations based on merit of their performance. Also visit social organizations listed in our web directory, goto the main site and follow from there.
- If you see a site that does not look genuine, report to the Government. Write to the webmaster. Spread the word among your social network.
- Before you throw your hard earned money, take your time and ask yourself where does this money go and who gets it.
That’s all for today, take care you all!

You are Good Da** right about that. I am poor, probably won’t be donating to anyone, not even to my country. But you are right, take all the time you have before you dump your money for donation. Think about who is getting and how wisely it would be used.
