Nepal’s Terai is less visited by tourists. No way!

Ask any Nepalese about which part of Nepal is less visited by tourists. Now, ask the same question to tourists. Will the two questions bring same answer ?

If the answers isĀ  Lower part of Nepal known as Terai, that answer is wrong. Read on…

First, given that there is no official records showing where tourists hit the road once they land in Nepal, how can you provide a correct answer to such questions ? Counting a crowd who had to land in a particular city because they had no other options does not provide for the true reasons for being there.

Many among us believe that Kathmandu and Pokhara are the two most visited cities by tourists. It is true but it could be wrong if we add the ingredient called freedom!

Again coming to main point, seeing crowds of strangers in a city does not mean it is the most visited by choice.

Even as on the date of writing this article, Nepal Government can not tell you how many tourists come to Nepal by land. A large number of tourists come to Nepal by land crossing the border with India which is located in Terai belt of Nepal. Hence it is morally wrong to even level Terai as the less visited Nepal. Given the data on tourists by land, it would be easy to prove which part of Nepal is less visited by tourists. Also there is no record on how many tourists visit a particular city or place. Since all these informations are lacking, providing answer to the question is a guessing game.

Tourists coming by air must land in Kathmandu, there is no choice. Nepal has only one international airport and it is located in Kathmandu. Give an international airport to Terai, give freedom for people to pick the destinations that they wish to travel. Give the data on tourists coming to Nepal by land. Terai will go further attracting more tourists than the most crowed and polluted cities which today get the most attention.
Now, for all those people with good IQs (which definitely would not include us), what would be the correct answer to our question. Which part of Nepal is less visited by tourists ? We think it is, mt. Everest! Now, given the total number of tourists who land in Nepal, how many of them climb everest?

Terai can not be said as the the less visited place in Nepal without proper judgment of the treatment to the region by Nepal Government.

  • Lack of promotion of the region for tourism
  • Inability to link Terai well with other cities using more highways
  • Lack of proper Health Care such as Hospitals, all so called “reputed” hospitals are located in capital city of Nepal
  • Heavy concentration of Government offices in Kathmandu, instead of keeping scattered through out the Nepal region, some of which could be located in Terai region
  • and above all, by not creating another international airport for the benefit of Terai region. Katmandu’s airport is one of the deadliest airport in the world, it provides poor visibility, it does not offer Instrument Landing Systme (ILS), many deadly crashes have occurred here due to bad weather and airport being located below a valley where a Boeing literally shoots down. Perhaps a safer airport can be created in Terai belt where the land are flat.
